Bio: "The subject of a 2005 Twin Palms monograph, Andre de Dienes was born in 1913 in Turia, Transylvania (now Romania). He first came to fame as the photographer who discovered the young Norma Jean, a.k.a Marilyn Monroe. De Dienes had traveled throughout Europe and worked briefly in North Africa before arriving in Paris to study art. His early photographs were published in L'Humanite (a Communist newspaper) and he worked for The Associated Press until 1936. It was the famous Parisian couturier, Captain Molyneux who encouraged de Dienes to become a fashion photographer. He emigrated to the U.S. and settled in New York to work for Esquire, Vogue, Life and Montgomery Ward. His work on the female nude has been widely published (in over 20 books in the US, Japan, England and Germany). His work epitomizes the era of the pin-up. The women have the full-figured look of that time and there is an undeniably playful quality to the images."--Photo-eye
