Availability: Out of stock

Daido MORIYAMA, photographer. “auto-portrait.” Simon BAKER, essay. Japan: Match & Co., 2010, First Edition, HB, slipcase, 26 cm x 18 cm, 84 pp, 36 b/w reproductions, photo imbedded in the cover, text in English, limited to 1000 copies.

The first publication from "MMM" - Daido Moriyama, Hisako Motoo (editor), and Satoshi Machiguchi (art direction). Garnering rave reviews at the 2010 Paris Photo Fair, auto-portrait collects self-portraits Moriyama has shot over the course of four decades. This being Moriyama, almost all of the self-portraits are shadows and reflections, random appearances of which are seen throughout his photobooks.

"This is the first book of MMM label collaborating with Daido Moriyama, Satoshi Machiguchi and Hisako Motoo, started in 2010. The text in the book is contributed by Simon Baker, the photography curator of Tate Modern. 'When I take my reflections or shadows, I somehow feel personal consciousness. Photographs are reflections of selves even if there would not be selves in finders. My answer to a question: photography is a mirror or a window? is that photography is a unity of a mirror and a window. Is Photography a medium to reflect society or self? Both are involved, I think.' MMM label will continue to publish Daido’s book yearly. Daido says, 'As I trust Satoshi of ability and sense as the outstanding designer. I am pleased my work are cooked freely and the label will take my photographs anywhere Satoshi and Hisako like'."--Publisher

“The lush black and tonal range of this publication are an example of how beautiful basic offset printing can be. The same is true of the craftsmanship exhibited in the book’s layout and edit. In its simplicity, it shines.”--Ivan Vartanian
