Denjiro IDE, photographer. "Shimabara Unzen Zue” - “Pictures of Shimabara and Unzen." Nagasaki: Hibiki Shashinkan/Self-Published, 1930, First Edition, 32 cm x 25 cm. ”Numerous photographic plates (several tipped-in and fold-out) and illustrations bound with facing tissue guards, One foldout map, Japanese text, captions in English and Japanese. Folio. Original decorated leather binding with leather application on top board.”--British Museum description

“Ide ran a commercial photographic studio, the Hibiki Shashin-kan, in Nagasaki during the 1920s and 30s. Experimented with the various printing techniques to produce soft, hazy, and emotionally laden images. Shimabara Unzen Zue follows on from the 'Souvenir du Nagasaki' to cover the city's surrounding countryside. Again a variety of papers and printing styles are used to great effect. If anything, there is even more of an emphasis on artistic expression than in the previous volume. Moody scenes in the style of Shiotani Teikoh prevail. This publication ranks amongst the best expression of the 'shashin geijutsu' movement in Japan.”--British Museum Curator’s comments.
