Hajime SAWATARI "Mandara" 1971 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

Hajime SAWATARI, photographer. “Mandara” - “Mandala.” Japan: Best Sellers, 1971, First Edition, PB, 28 cm x 21 cm, approx. 150 pp, color & b/w photos.

Rare Photo book associated with Akio JISSOJI's cult mash-up of Zen, eroticism, violence, cultism and Experimental/Pinku/Nouvelle Vague film-making. Most of the book - about 100 pages - consists of Sawatari’s brilliant b/w photos in the chiaroscuro gravure style of the great photobooks of the 1960s and 1970s. This book predates Sawatari’s famed “Alice” and “Nadia” books by two years and might be his first publication. The last 50 pages or so are images from the film. Look up the Midnight Eye film review for a fascinating essay that explains the themes and techniques of the film. I have a feeling its only a matter of time before it is in the Criterion Collection.

Sawatari, like most Japanese photographers, pays the bills with vibrant nude photography of young Japanese idols and actresses. Yet Sawatari is also one of Japan's greatest artist-photographers of the nude and has contributed a number of important photobooks to the genre - most famously “Nadia”, “Alice”, "Alice from the Sea" and "Taste of Honey."
