Yoshiichi HARA, photographer. "Sutorippazu meikan 1994" - "Stripper's Hall of Fame 1994". Japan: Fuga Shobo, 1994, First Edition, HB, dj, obi, 15 cm x 23 cm, approx. 209 pp, color photos, text in Japanese.

More than just advertisement (though undoubtedly part of the attraction) - great photography and social history, ala Nobuyoshi Araki’s “Tokyo Lucky Hole.” The publishing company went out of business soon after publication and this book has been out-of-print ever since. 74 Japanese professional exotic dancers photographed onstage and off. Hara is a cult figure in Japan having dedicated much of his art to documenting the lives of showgirls, bargirls and prostitutes - preparing for work, at work, after work - backstage, on stage, at home and at leisure. Many of his works from the 1960s and 70s mix great photography and social history - something like early, more sympathetic versions of Nobuyoshi Araki's "Tokyo Lucky Hole." Some of Hara's publications, like "Shukujo Roku (Ladies Record)" and "Utsutsu no Yami (Darkness of Modern Times)" are highly artistic collections of chiaroscuro b/w photographs masterfully combining nudes and landscapes. This book is in Hara's color documentary photorealism style.

Condition: Very Good.
