Hiroshi HAMAYA, photographer. “American America.” Tokyo: Kawade Shobo, 1971, HB, slipcase, clear acetate dj, 27 x 25 cm, 144 pp with 248 b/w gravure reproductions, plus 81 pages of text in Japanese.

“For 71 days in 1967, Hiroshi Hamaya drove over 17,000 miles through 35 of the lower 48 states in an Oldsmobile Jetstar 88. The images, organized by state, have the feel of an inquisitive anthropologist gazing upon unfamiliar settings and customs for the first time. Compared to, say, Robert Frank's The Americans, Hamaya's road trip pictures have a detached, quiet and mostly non-judgmental quality that is filled with wonder at our vast and peculiar country. Hamaya was the first Asian photographer to be inducted into the Magnum Agency. He was the 1987 recipient of the Hasselblad Award, and the subject of a retrospective at The International Center of Photography in New York in 1986.”--Photo-eye.

Hiroshi Hamaya’s American America, Yasuhiro Ishimoto’s Chicago, Chicago and Sumihari Watanabe’s Face of Washington Square form something of a trilogy of late 60s photobook masterpieces - essays on American life by Japanese photographers.
