Availability: Out of stock

Hiroshi HAMAYA, photographer. "Sonorama Photobook Series 1: Snow Land” - “Sonorama Shashin Sensho 1: Yukiguni." Hiroshi HAMAYA, text. Japan: Asahi Sonorama, 1977, First Edition, HB, dj, as issued, 21 cm x 22 cm, 120 pp, b/w photos.

"Hamaya was the first Asian photographer to be inducted into the prestigious Magnum Agency. This beautifully produced retrospective volume from Asahi Sonorama includes work produced between 1939 and 1961. It focuses on the customs and folkways of rural Niigata Prefecture, Japan's leading rice producing area. All of the pictures show the area covered in snow, as it is for approximately one third of each year. In scenes that positively medieval, Hamaya captured a way of life that was already rapidly disappearing."--Photo-eye.

Condition: Book is excellent, unusually bright with none of the soiling, toning or foxing spots often seen in books from this series. The best copy I have ever seen. One of the rarest from the series.
