Eikoh HOSOE "Man and Woman" 1961 Photobook 1st Ed

Availability: Out of stock

Eikoh HOSOE, photographer. "Otoko to Onna" - "Man and Woman". Japan: Camerart, 1961, First Edition, HB, dj, slipcase, b/w gravure reproduction photos.

A rare copy of the first printing from 1961. A Classic - One of the most sought after photography books in the world, mentioned prominently in Parr and Badger's History of the Photobook. This series of elegant photographs represents the first of Hosoe's book collaborations with the Japanese dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, who was an important figure in the 1960s avant garde movement.

"Hosoe's now scarce first book features dancers' bodies in exuberant and fluid movement. As is characteristic of his figure studies, Hosoe exploits the grainy qualities of his film to produce images in which flesh becomes abstract and mysterious without losing any of its sensuality."--Photo-eye

"Despite its intensely Japanese qualities, the style, dramatic and rhetorical, focuses on the human body in a way alien to the Japanese, where there was no tradition of the nude in an abstract sense, only nakedness." --Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, Vol. 1.

Condition: Book is very good, interior pages are exceptionally clean, colophon is still present. Slipcase has moisture effects around the extremities. Dust Jacket has small light areas of moisture effect at the corners only which are visible only from the inside, otherwise very light wear. Looking at the slipcase one would expect to see some evidence of moisture has passed on to the book but on the contrary there is none.
