Availability: Out of stock

Ikko NARAHARA, photographer. “Sonorama Shashin Sensho 9: Okoku: Chinmoku no en, Kabe no naka" - "Sonorama Photobook Series 9: Domains.” Shoji YAMAGISHI, essay. Japan: Asahi Sonorama, 1978, First Edition, HB, dj, 21 cm x 22 cm, 120 pp, b/w photos, text in Japanese & English.

“Taken in part from Narahara's first solo exhibition, this survey from the Asahi Sonorama series contains two chapters: 'Garden of Silence' shows the Trappist monastery at Tobetsu in Hokkaido that was founded in 1896 by French missionaries. The following section 'Within the Walls' documents the life of the women at Wakayama Prefectural Penitentiary for females. Narahara departed from his predecessors documentary style, which emphasized clear, readable storytelling. Rather, his style tends toward the surreal, with incidental still lifes and details often tending toward a spacious - sometimes vertiginous - abstraction.”--Photo-eye.

Condition: Good, though it does have some light age spots in the usual places - front and end pages, underside of the jacket - there is only minimal handling wear and overall still unusually white. I'd say this copy is in the top 20-25 percent condition-wise.
