Junichiro SEKINO, artist. Limited Edition of 300 copies with a self-carved and self-printed woodblock print loosely housed in a mat in the front. This example is hand-numbered #147 out of the edition of 300.

A limited edition catalog of Sekino’s 56 print series “53 Stations of the Tokaido Road.” Sekino’s series was inspired by Hiroshige’s many Tokaido Road series and includes reproductions of some of the original inspirations in the description pages that are opposite the Sekino reproductions. This book was created upon the completion of the entire series in 1974, which was begun in 1959. This special signed, sealed and hand-numbered limited edition book Includes an original signed and sealed woodblock print.

Junichiro Sekino (1914-1988) biography: Even before his twentieth birthday Junichiro Sekino was already involved with woodblock prints: he made them together with friends while still at High School, and he knew Shiko Munakata (a few years his senior) from boyhood (Munakata was also from Aomori prefecture). From 1932 he exhibited with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai. In the 30s he studied with Koshiro Onchi and with Senpan Maekawa. After WWII he became especially well-known in the USA, but his star rose rapidly elsewhere in the world as well. His work is characterized by its technical accomplishment and variety."--Saru Gallery

Condition: Book is Very Good. The Woodblock Print is in an Excellent state. The outer case has wear, especially along the edges. The book is SIGNED by Sekino in Sumi ink on the front free page with his red seal. The print is a fine impression with vivid colors - SIGNED in pencil with Sekino’s red seal, Colophon page is hand-numbered.
