Availability: Out of stock

Junichiro SEKINO, artist. "Kigan-ema" - "Folding Picture Book.” Japan: Private Publication (Bokuseki do), 1979, 15 x 20 cm, 20 pp woodblock prints. Self-Carved and Self-Printed. Finely bound in accordion style with folded double-sheets. Hand-painted wooden boards, Woodblock printed paper label on the case. This example is #209 from an edition limited to 250 copies. Brush signed and stamped by Sekino.

One of Sekino's finest woodblock print books. The title, presentation, humorously vulgar subjects are an homage to Japanese traditional erotic shunga as well as the palm-leaf books carried by monks on their journeys with text and pictures on opposite pages. Finely bound orihon (concertina) style between two wooden boards. Both boards are hand-painted and signed by Sekino. Sekino's brush signature is also within with his red chop seal. The woodcuts within beautifully imitate the wood-grain.

Junichiro Sekino (1914-1988) biography: Even before his twentieth birthday Junichiro Sekino was already involved with woodblock prints: he made them together with friends while still at High School, and he knew Shiko Munakata (a few years his senior) from boyhood (Munakata was also from Aomori prefecture). From 1932 he exhibited with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai. In the 30s he studied with Koshiro Onchi and with Senpan Maekawa. After WWII he became especially well-known in the USA, but his star rose rapidly elsewhere in the world as well. His work is characterized by its technical accomplishment and variety."--Saru Gallery
