* Kishin SHINOYAMA "135 Onna Tomodachi" 1979 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

Kishin SHINOYAMA, photographer. "135 Onna Tomodachi." Japan: Shogakukan, 1979, First Edition, PB, dj, 28 cm x 21 cm, 300 pp, color photos.

A thick book of Shinoyama’s sensational 1970's era fashion work, including nudes, much of which was published in the Goro Gekisha mooks. Many of the big-name Japanese models of the era, including Agnes LUM, Momoe YAMAGUCHI, Aki MIZUSAWA, Mieko HARADA, Maiko KAWAKAMI, Mami ASADA, as well as a number of one-named Asian and Western models that wouldn’t be out of place in the early photographs of David Hamilton and Jacques Bourboulon. Curiously, there is also a section of performance photos of the legendary 1970's all-women rock group "The Runaways" with Lita Ford, Joan Jett and the rest of the band, who were a great sensation in late 1970s Japan.

"In 1979 Shinoyama published "135 Women" with the tagline "The girl next door can also be a pinup model." This is when he created the word gekisha, a combination of geki, "shock," and sha, "Photography," which came into popular use thereafter. Gekisha didn't have to do with the force of an image; rather it made the ordinary sensational, such as showing a celebrity eating or crying."--Kaneko & Vartanian, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s, p. 104.
