Bio: "Otsuji Kiyoshi (1923-2001) was a photographer who defied categorization. As a founder of various experimental workshops as well as a teacher, Otsuji stands out in the way in which he has stayed ahead of trends in photography, developing many, contributing to each, while at the same time not being tied to any of them. He was truly avant-garde, without appearing to have any of their attitudes. He is truly modernist, without any disdain for documentary photography. He never published any books, he never courted fame, indeed, he seems to have been content with passing on whatever he knew to his students. He is a towering figure, somebody who was at a certain point long before others... as unorthodox as it is free. Abstract, surrealist, artistic, funny - but never cynical - documentary, conceptual, academic, always fresh, but never loud or aggressive... After seeing all the noise in photography Otsuji's work has a curious ability to make the viewer quiet."--Titus Boeder. British Museum
