"Mao Ishikawa studied with Shomei Tomatsu in the 1960s then returned to her native Okinawa where she recorded her uninhibited life in and around the bars surrounding the US military base on the island. In 1986 she visited a friend who had returned home to live in a downtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. She recorded the life of her American friends without restraint, producing these exuberantly frank images."--publisher
