Availability: Out of stock

Masato SETO, photographer. "Living Room" - "Heya." Tokyo: Shinchosha, 1996, First Edition, HB, dj, 28 cm x 20 cm, approx. 90 pp, 1 single- and 44 double-page b/w photos, essay by Seto in English.

A brilliantly designed book, with pages folding out accordion style - at once modern yet also harkening to the folding fukuro toji style ehon, the scrolls, the pillow books of Japan past. Masato Seto was born in Thailand to a Japanese father and Vietnamese Thai mother, moving to Fukushima, Japan at the age of 8. He studied photography at the Tokyo Shashin Senmon Gakko. Further studies were with Daido Moriyama, afterwards serving as an assistant to Masahisa Fukase. Seto's Living Room (Heya), published in 1996 won the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award.

"A lot of Seto's photography involves people existing in a space they may or may not be comfortable in, be it a public park (Picnic), the train (Silent Mode), or their own living room (Living Room Tokyo), and how they negotiate that space, how they present themselves in what amounts to a static backdrop."--Japan Exposures
