Availability: Out of stock

Masatoshi NAITO, photographer. "Nihon Shashin-ka 38” - “Japanese Photographers 38" Tokyo: Iwanami Shoten, 1997, HB, dj, 23 x 22 cm, 72 pp, 52 b/w & 4 color photos, text in Japanese.

Number 38 in an important series of 40 books on individual Japanese photographers, spanning the history of Japanese photography - one of the most prized from the series.

"Originally trained as a scientist, Naito took up photography professionally in the early sixties. He developed an interest in ethnography and folklore and was especially fascinated with the mummified remains of priests who had starved themselves in order to attain enlightenment at the sacred mountain of Dewa Yudono-san in Tohoku. He photographed the itako mediums and spiritual places of this area along with its folk culture and popular religious practices... Using an open flash and mostly working at night, Naito's images endow people and objects alike with a mystical aura. He weaves the ancient tales into photographic narratives."--Photo-eye on Naito's contribution to the Sonorama Series, "Baba," of which a number of photos are included here.

Condition: Very Good, with obi.

A special copy that includes the rare advertising pamphlet for the entire series - not often seen - and, most importantly, a ahort note from Naito to the editor at Iwanami Shoten in which he mentions only choosing four color photographs from his post 1980s work - these indeed are the last four photos in the book.
