"Narutoshi FURUKAWA (1900-1996) was born in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, the grandson of Shumpei FURUKAWA, a pioneering figure in Japanese photography. After leaving Junior High School in 1919 he moved to Tokyo where he entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (Tokyo Bijutsu Gakujo) where he studied photography. Three years after graduation he entered the Oriental Photo Industrial Company where he became a technician as well as a teacher. In 1930 he joined the New Photography Research Society (Shinko shashin kenkyukai) that had been formed by Senichi KIMURA in the same year. After the war Furukawa was made a Professor at the Tokyo Junior College of Photography, a position he held until 1982. Furukawa published the present volume after his retirement. 'Familiar Faces' shows a selection of portraits and nude studies taken largely after the war. The second volume published one year before his death charts his progress from contructivist to modernist photography as well as images from the life at his alma mater, the Tokyo School of Fine Arts."--Maggs
