Nobuyoshi ARAKI "Erotos" 1993 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

Nobuyoshi ARAKI, photographer. “Erotos”. Japan: Libroport, 1993, First Edition, HB, dj, 31 cm x 23 cm, 134 pp, b/w photos.

"In perhaps his finest work to date, controversial photographer Nobuyoshi Araki makes a radical departure from his usual portraits and cityscapes. A collection of arrestingly primal close-ups of parts of the body as well as various objects - pipes, fruit, cracks in the sidewalk, flowers - Erotos delves deep into the erotic subconscious. Reproduced in gorgeous duotone full-page bleeds."--Photo-eye

"Rounding off 1993, Araki's second explosive year, this collection breaks into a new realm. The idea of metaphorical images of female genitalia covering the world is unfurled with overwhelming force."--Kotaro Iizawa, Araki: Self, Life, Death

Araki's title combines the words "eros" and "thanatos" implying that death is ever-present in the erotic realm. Unique and seriously artistic - yet deciphering the photos is plenty of fun. Disturbingly provacative images contrasting everyday inanimate items made obscene and close-up fleshly forms made abstract. Look closely - Araki fooled the Japanese censors more than once - at least in this publication - apparently he did run into trouble at the exhibition. One of Araki's greatest photobooks.
