* Nobuyoshi ARAKI "Laments" - "Kukei, Kinkei" 1991 Photobook SIGNED with Obi!

Availability: Out of stock

Nobuyoshi ARAKI, photographer. "Kukei, Kinkei" - “Laments: Skyscapes and From Close-range.” Gozo Yoshimasu, poetry. Kohtaro Iizawa, Arturo Silva, essays. Tokyo: Shinchosha, 1991, First Edition, 33 x 26 cm, text in Japanese and English. Two pb books housed in slipcase: Skyscapes, 100 pp, 46 color images; From Close-range, 142 pp, 86 single- and double-page duotone reproductions.

“An increasingly scarce Araki title - actually two distinct books - showing work that departs from the sort of bondage and kink for which Araki has become best-known. Skyscapes highlights his hand-colored views of the sky, while From Close-range surveys his plant still-lifes - the latter looking like severely entropic versions of Blossfeldt. Highly recommended!”--Photo-eye.

Araki writes: "After my wife's death, I took photographs of the sky from my room. I went out on to the balcony and again photographed the sky, the wind, the light, the persimmon tree next door, the ivy twined along the wall. I poured beer into Yoko's favorite glass and shot its light and shadows, shot the dying flowers, an apple that a bird had pecked, a dead lizard, and our jogging shoes. Together with our cat, Chiro."

Many commentators feel that the works Araki produced after Yoko's death are "of a higher artistic order than he had previously achieved" (Iizawa).

Condition: Very clean books, bright with no signs of handling, straight unbent spines. A few stray light foxing spots. Rare copy with obi band - some wear and creases in the obi. SIGNED by Araki across the back of the slipcase.
