Nobuyoshi ARAKI, photographer. "Shashin gekijo: Tokyo ereji" - "Photo-Theatre: Tokyo Elegy." Japan: Tojusha, 1981, First Edition, PB, dj, 24 cm x 19 cm, 264 pp, color & b/w photos.

"Araki - the best-known and most controversial Japanese photographer, who produced around 300 books - is a unique phenomenon in nude photography. His first work was an account of his honeymoon. This intimate, personal approach to photography shocked the public, which was not used to seeing representations of an individual's private life and descriptions by images of his domestic space and private emotions. The idea of a personal log, which, rather than ambitiously representing the world tells tiny, private stories, rapidly came to dominate the world of photography. For Araki, the nude image - first of his wife, and then, after her death, of his new female companions and girlfriends, often tied up and hanging - was of course omnipresent in his most important works... His was always the antithesis of the false, superficial glamour style. His insistence on photographing the pubic area was in defiance of censorship; on several occasions his exhibitions were shut down by the police, who confiscated his works and arrested Araki and his assistants on the spot."--Bertolotti, Books of Nudes, pp 188-189.

"Originally scheduled for publication in 1972, these extreme images of sex and violence in photo-scenarios were edited by Araki himself."--Kotaro Iizawa, Araki Self, Life, Death.
