* Nobuyoshi ARAKI "Polaevacy" 2000 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

Nobuyoshi ARAKI, photographer. "Polaevacy." Japan: Shobunsha, 2000, First Edition, HB, dj, 22 cm x 15 cm, 128 pp, 665 color photos, Japanese text.

"The title is an Araki-style portmanteau word combining Polaroid with privacy. Araki attributes a 'whiff of secrecy' to his Polaroids taken in the intervals between work. Polaroids taken by Araki since the 1980s are here compiled by Koga Hirano."--Kotaro Iizawa, Araki: Self, Life, Death.

The Polaroids are presented 6 per page, an eclectic mix of nudes, self-portraits, flowers, cityscapes, skyscapes, friends, his cat, still life - in short everything Araki. The few pages of text present a dialogue between Araki and Kotaro Iizawa, Japan's most prominent photo critic. Araki talks about the attraction of the Polaroid medium, its characteristics and advantages. To Araki the unique surface of a Polaroid reminds him of a woman's skin. The erotic connotation of the Polaroid was ingrained in Araki at an early age simply because it allowed him to take photos that otherwise would have been turned down by a photo lab in censorious Japan.
