Availability: Out of stock

Nobuyoshi ARAKI, photographer. "Shashin Shijyo Shugi" - "Supreme Sentimentalism." Tokyo: Heibonsha, 2000, First Edition, HB, dj, 27 cm x 19 cm, 368pp, 201 b/w single- and double-page images, 2 pages of text in Japanese.

"A photographic collection to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of Araki's birth. A chronological selection of 201 photographs from among 5,000 taken by Araki with the Plaubel Makina camera that he had used as his workaday camera since the 1980's. Also a chronological record of one of Araki's favourite female models, Muse, who featured in his photographs for several years."--Kotaro Iizawa, Araki: Death, Self, Life.

"Kanreki" means 60th birthday in Japanese (the publishing date - May 25 - is indeed Araki's birthday) and is symbolized by the color red - hence the cover of this heavy, densely-packed, tightly-bound hardcover. One of Araki's most handsomely produced publications, it has the feel of an important art book. Includes most of Araki's favorite themes/obsessions: his wife Yoko, his cat Chiro, flowers and, of course, nudes - studio nudes, women in kimono (with and without ropes), couples, beautiful pregnant women, bar hostesses and candid nudes of Japanese stars like the writer Izumi Suzuki and the photographer Hiromix.

Condition: Very Good, with obi, SIGNED by Araki with silver marker on the front endpaper.
