Availability: Out of stock

Nobuyoshi ARAKI, photographer. “Shusengo" - "After the War.” Japan: AaT Room, 1993, First Edition, PB, no dj as issued, 22 cm x 31 cm, 112 pp, b/w photos. Limited to 1000 copies.

“Araki's first limited edition since 1984, consisting of photographs taken with a 6 x 6 camera between 16 August (the day after the End-of-the-War Memorial Day in Japan) and 3 September in 1973, freely laid out as contact sheets, the flood of images ushering forth memories lost over twenty years.”--Kotaro Iizawa, Araki: Self, Life, Death

Araki's first Art Room limited edition has the feel of an important document, published twenty years to the day after the first of these photos. August 15 marks the day the Japanese surrendered and ended World War II. In Japan the day is memorialized for prayers of peace. The images within Shusego, laid out as a series of contact sheets, images spilling of the pages, quickly bring to mind Moriyama's "Shashin yo sayonara" - and overall, the resemblance to the Provoke-era work of Daido Moriyama, with the wealth of just-the-right-voyeuristic-moment street scenes, is uncanny. Some of Araki's greatest and most moving art.

Condition: Very Good. Clean interior, spine is unbent. There is a slight humidity waviness to the pages at the top and bottom edges, otherwise quite fine.
