Kishin SHINOYAMA "Silk Road, Vol. 4: Eastern China" 1982 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

"Silk Road, Vol. 4: Eastern China." Kishin SHINOYAMA, photographer. Japan: Shueisha, 1982, First Edition, HB, dj, decorative case, 35 cm x 27 cm, approx. 250 pp, single and double page color reproductions.

The fourth volume from an eight volume series. A monumental achievement, an awe-inspiring collection of images along the thousands of miles of the ancient silk road from Japan to Italy. Each book is a series of impeccably sequenced, photo-essays of people and places paying special attention to extreme landscapes, places of worship and especially the character and lifestyles of the residents. Far more than travelogues, both artistically and historically amazing. The cinematic sequencing is as artistic as the images themselves. The full and double page bleeds are printed in Shinoyama's preferred saturated deep color that leaps off the page. At the end of each book is a generous amount of text (in Japanese) and a fold-out four page map of the entire journey and all of the places visited. A wonderful work of art-history, to my mind every bit the equal of Shinoyama's more well-known photobooks "A Fine Day" and "Paris," and eight volumes taken in-total, surpassing them. This is from the deluxe First Edition printing - Heavy oversized books, that are still barely large enough to hold Shinoyama's grand visions - there were two subsequent mass-marketed printings in smaller condensed formats.

Condition: Very good, with case.
