Takashi HOMMA "New Tokyo Standard" 2001 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

Takashi HOMMA, photographer. "New Tokyo Standard." Japan: Rockin' On, 2001, First Edition, PB, dj, 30 cm x 22 cm, 98 pp, color photos, English text.

Homma's follow-up to the famed "Tokyo Suburbia" which was awarded the 1998 Annual Kimura Ihei Photography Prize. Some of Parr & Badger's commentary is relevant: "At first glance, we can make the standard response: suburbs are soulless places...But Homma's suburbs seem also to evince more positive qualities...they seem remarkably well landscaped, luxuriant and well manicured, with little hint of the graffiti and rubbish that accompany the suburbs of the West....the tone of Homma's book is ambiguous enough to both intrigue us and keep us guessing." New Tokyo Standard is not so uncompromising in its vision as that previous book - impeccably cropped and balanced images of suburban landscapes are included here along with the very human souls who inhabit them but this book is more eclectic. Here Homma's eye includes the urban and fashionable with pictures of celebrities like Hiromix, Sayaka Yoshino, Vivian Hsu and Tamao Sato in shiny hip locales like Odaiba. Printed on thin paper that can prematurely age this book - but perhaps it was meant to seem a little ephemeral.

Condition: Uncommon condition for this book, Very Good with the thin minimalist obi band that usually is missing.
