Sonorama #27: Takeyoshi TANUMA, photographer. “Old Town... Tokyo of Yesteryear.” Japan: Asahi Sonorama, 1980, First Edition, HB, dj, 21 cm x 22 cm, 120 pp, b/w photos.

The Sonorama Photo Book series from 1977-1980 extended to 27 volumes and remarkably included many great collectible photo books - Hamaya's "Snow Land", Hosoe's "Embrace", Sawatari's "Nadia", Moriyama's "Japan, a Photo Theatre II", Araki's "Yoko, My Love", Ueda's "Sand Dunes", Tomatsu's "Kingdom of Mud", Suda's "Fushi Kaden", Kawada's "Cosmos of the Dream King", Naito's "Baba", Yanagisawa's "Tracks of the City" - and this book. "Shitamachi" is the Japanese title of this collection, a word that connotes the older sections of Tokyo, especially Asakusa, Ueno and Nippori - the "Edo" of pre-modern Japan. Shitamachi was the area of artisans, merchants and commoners as opposed to the samurai and ruling class people who lived in other areas. Tanuma, born in 1929, was a disciple of Ihei KIMURA, worked for Time-Life and won the 1975 Japan Photographers Association Award. He is best known for his work chronicling the changes in Tokyo in the post WWII decades. The photos in this book were taken between 1949 and 1968, mostly in Asakusa.
