Tokihiro SATO, photographer. "Photo-Respiration." Japan: Nikkor Club/Bijutsu Shuppansha, 1997, First Edition, PB, 22 cm x 30 cm, 128 pp, b/w & color photos with fold-outs, English & Japanese text.

Sato was originally a trained sculptor, but decided to go with photography to better communicate his ideas. Sato uses a large-format camera for exposures that last from one to three hours, while he moves through the space creating points of light or illuminated lines drawn with flashlights or flashes made by reflecting mirrors. The results are detailed photographs interrupted by patterns of light. Because of the long exposures, Sato’s movements across the scene remain undetectable by the camera; the photograph captures his presence but not his image. There are number of excellent articles detailing Sato's art, including easily found reviews at The Japan Times and Japan Exposures.

Condition: Good, spine/binding is firm and unbent. Would be Very Good but there is a stain about 2 cm long and half cm high that affects a small area at the bottom of the last 30 pages near the binding.
