Kochi was the birthplace of Shoun, often considered the first Shin-Hanga woodblock print artist, and the Kochi Museum of Art has the world's most important collection of his art. This book is the best resource on this important late 19th/early 20th century artist whose career straddled the Meiji, Taisho and Shin-Hanga periods. Containing all of Shoun's important woodblock prints, including the bijin prints for which he is most renowned, the prints which were important precursors to the famed shin-hanga bijin prints of Goyo, Shinsui, and Kotondo. In later life Shoun primarily produced paintings and many of greatest are included here as well. This book was published in association with the Ota Ukiyoe Museum where the works were exhibited.
