Availability: Out of stock

Yasuhiro YOSHIOKA, photographer. “avant-garde sixties.” Japan: Photo Musee, 1999, First Edition, PB, dj, 20 x 15 cm, 314pp, 179pp of b/w & color plates, 135 pp of text with illustrations.

Yoshioka only published three original photobooks from the 1960s to the early 70s: "Yoshioka Yasuhiro Sakuhinshu," "Jyuai," and "Sodomu no rakuen." All three are cited in important recent references: the first is one of the select 40 cited in Kaneko & Vartanian's "Japanese Photo Books of the '60s & '70s" and the latter two are cited in Bertolucci's "Books of Nudes." A renaissance man who also worked with Japanese giants of the cinema, including Nagisa Oshima and Hiroshi Teshigahara, Yoshioka seems to have been content with only these three books. The Photo Musee "avant-garde sixties" is the most important compilation book of Yoshioka's photos and one of the most prized from the series - it includes most of the photos from the three books and a number of uncollected photos. Probably what makes it most desirable is the inclusion of the uncensored photos from Sakuhinshu that were published on gatefold pages with perforations to make the obscenity censors jobs easier. For that reason very few unmutilated copies of Sakuhinshu survive.
