Yasuhiro YOSHIOKA, photographer. "Jyuai - Daisan no Venus" - "Beastly Love - The Third Venus." Ikuya Kato and Nagisa Oshima, text; Kohei Sugiura, design. Japan: Sogotosho, 1971, First Edition, 33 cm x 26 cm, 40 images in b/w & color on 26 folded sheets (these are essentially posters printed on heavy weight paper) contained in a photo-illustrated portfolio case. Text (in Japanese) contained on six loose sheets. Additional sheet with collage of all images. Most of the photos are printed in rich gravure, a few - including the largest 8-panel sheet - are printed in color.

"Jyuai (Animal Love) is presented in a box whose cover is composed like a jigsaw and shows a woman (in ecstasy). Looking more closely, we discover that the pieces of the puzzle are shaped like sinuous little fishes. Inside, the photos are printed on large sheets folded in two or four, like posters that need to be unfolded for their meanings to be understood. Each female nude is photographed in relation to a creature in the animal world. Monkeys, cats and dogs are intermingled with the naked bodies, in eccentric, refined compositions. There are in fact continual references to zoophilia in the Japanese tradition, as in the Western tradition that goes back to Greek mythology. In popular legend, a special type of fox has the magic ability to metamorphose, usually into a seductive girl who attracts men. In the prints of Eisen and Hokusai, we see animals coupling with humans - including one horrible well-known image of a woman being sexually possessed by an octopus - and the humans themselves turning into animals."--Bertolotti, Books of Nudes, p. 174-5.

A word about the posters. Each poster or sheet is made up of 2,4 or 8 panels that are 33 x 26cm in size. So the image sizes vary - some are 1 panel in size and paired with another image on a sheet which is 2 panels in size (the panels may be combined both on the short side and the long side of the sheet and the images may be either landscape style and portrait style - that is longer horizontally or vertically); some images are 2 panels in size either taking up a full sheet or combined with another image on a 4 panel sheet; some images are 4 panels in size; and finally an image may be a full 8 panels in size. So the unwrapping and viewing of the sheets is inseparable from the experience. When one first one views a panel sitting in the case, one cannot know if that is a full image, half of an image, a quarter of an image or even only one-eighth of an image. Neither can one know in which direction the rest of the image will be. This is quite an amazing achievement, since for this effect to be convincing, every panel has to have the potential of artistic completeness within it. In this sense, it is in a long line of traditional Japanese erotic art, especially shunga books and scrolls where the experience unfolds, the formats shift and delightful surprises await.

The late 1960's and early 1970's were a fertile time for Yoshioka's artistry, publishing 3 photobooks: Yoshioka Yasuhiro sakuhinshu in 1963, Jyuai and The Garden of Sodom (both cited in Bertolotti), both from 1971. In addition to his important photography contributions, Yoshioka was the cinematographer for a number of films, including seven between 1967 and 1972 directed by the controversial Nagisa Oshima. A couple of them can be found in the Criterion release Oshima's Outlaw '60's - Japanese Summer - Double Suicide and Sinner in Paradise. Yoshioka's first photo book, Yoshioka Yasuhiro Sakuhinshu, from 1963, came from a time in which he was the still photographer for two of Hiroshi Teshigahara's cinematic masterpieces, Face of Another and Woman in the Dunes. This first photo book is one of the select 40 cited in Kaneko & Vartanian's Japanese Photo Books of the '60s & '70s. So, though Yoshioka produced only three original photo books, his batting average, so to speak, is a thousand - it couldn't have hurt that he was spending all of his time with geniuses of cinema.

Condition: Very Good, though lacking the outer box. Inner case and sheets show few signs of handling and little of the usual ink migration in the b/w gravure sheets.
