Yoshiichi HARA "Mandala Zukan" 1988 Photobook

Availability: Out of stock

Yoshiichi HARA, photographer. "Mandala Zukan." Japan: Banseisha, 1988, First Edition, PB, dj, 21 cm x 21 cm, approx. 600 pp, 300 b/w photos, text in Japanese.

Hara is a cult figure in Japan having dedicated much of his art to documenting the lives of showgirls, bargirls and prostitutes - preparing for work, at work, after work - backstage, on stage, at home and at leisure. Many of his works from the 1960s and 70s mix great photography and social history - something like early, more sympathetic versions of Nobuyoshi Araki's "Tokyo Lucky Hole." Some of Hara's publications, like "Sutorippazu meikan 1994" are in his color documentary photorealism style. This book, one of his best and rarest, is similar to "Shukujo Roku (Ladies Record)" and "Utsutsu no Yami (Darkness of Modern Times)" - an artistic collection of chiaroscuro b/w photographs masterfully combining nudes and landscapes.
