Yoshiichi HARA, photographer. "Walk while ye have the light" - "Hikari aru uchi ni." Japan: Sokyusha, 2011, First Edition, HB, (no dj as issued), photo imbedded in the cover, 26 cm x 23 cm, 68 pp, 63 b/w photos.

In later years Hara has produced moody collections that combine the photos of real-life showgirls, bargirls and prostitutes for which he was known at an earlier age with atmospheric landscapes, street scenes and still life photos. Walk while ye have the light is practically a continuation to his previous photobook Darkness of modern times - this is evident from the identical design choices of the publisher - that the "light" titled book is black and the "dark" titled book is white bear witness that these books are siblings. In both books Hara masterfully sequences photos of nudes, landscapes, cityscapes and still life. This book was on a number of "best of" lists for the year - chosen by Atsushi Fujiwara, founder of Asphalt, for one.

Hara is a cult figure in Japan having dedicated much of his art to documenting the lives of showgirls, bargirls and prostitutes - preparing for work, at work, after work - backstage, on stage, at home and at leisure. Many of his works from the 1970s mix great photography and social history - something like early, more sympathetic versions of Nobuyoshi Araki's "Tokyo Lucky Hole." Hara is not in line with Japanese photorealism as might be expected but brings fascinating chiaroscuro lighting to his images similar to the work of Daido Moriyama or Ikko Narahara.
