Yoshiichi HARA, photographer. "Za Sutorippa 2: maihime densetsu 62-ri" - "The Stripper, Vol. 2: 62 Legendary Dancers." Japan: Futabasha, 2000, First Edition, PB, dj, 23 cm x 18 cm, approx. 250 pp, color photos.

More than just advertisement - great photography and social history. 62 Japanese professional exotic dancers photographed onstage and off. Hara is a cult figure in Japan having dedicated much of his art to documenting the lives of showgirls, bargirls and prostitutes - preparing for work, at work, after work - backstage, on stage, at home and at leisure. Many of his works from the 1970s and 80s mix great photography and social history - something like early, more sympathetic versions of Nobuyoshi Araki's "Tokyo Lucky Hole." Some of Hara's publications, like Mandala Zukan, Shukujo Roku (Ladies Record) and Utsutsu no Yami (Darkness of Modern Times) are highly artistic collections of chiaroscuro b/w photographs masterfully combining nudes and landscapes. This book is in Hara's color documentary photorealism style.
