Yoshiki SAITOH, photographer. "Akechi." Denki AKECHI, Rope Artist. Essay "A Rope and a Demon: Denki Akechi and his World" by Kohtaro Iizawa. Tokyo: Shinpusha, 2007, First Edition, HB, dj, 22 cm x 28 cm, 124 pp, color photos, text in English & Japanese.

Akechi was a legendary figure in the shadowy world of shibari and kinbaku rope-art. This book was published posthumously and primarily features the incredibly trusting model "Yumeji."

"The world of shibari is no doubt a special one. It is because shibari is a clandestine area that Akechi's ropes shine so mysteriously. There is a complicated psychological exchange that cannot be contained within the relationship between the ruler and the ruled - the ultimate relationship of trust. However, focusing only on the psychological aspects may not reveal the essence of Akechi's shibari. His work includes the aesthetics of nawame (knotting). Rope overlaps, forms knots, becomes entangled and cuts into the soft flesh. They say that Akechi's knots were so unique that nobody else could imitate them. The intricate shapes of the knots have a geometric beauty that resembles the beauty of a crystal. Shibari pursues the ultimate form of expression using human bodies. The ropes change the shape of the body, bringing out as much of its potential as possible."--Kohtaro Iizawa
