Oishi was an early trailblazer for Japanese women photographers.

"I was startled to find the photographer was a young lady... and I realized that the collection was the unique expression of a woman's viewpoint. Something sticky that weakened it seemed so at first, the expression of her work evaporated. At the same time I realized that my viewpoint was merely a man's viewpoint. It discouraged me... the tired middle-aged man's viewpoints very often, were accepted as our viewpoints. Narcissism is always followed by its shadow called self-torture. Asama Scroll, the prototype of this book, was a collection of photographs depicting a strange Kimono-clad girl running about like mad at the foot of Mt. Asama. The shadow of self-torture which was delicate... has become very much darker here. The metamorphosis is a proof. Her real existence has acquired greater reality."--Yoshimura
