Availability: Out of stock

Yoshiro KOSEKI, photographer. "Kujukuri-hama" - "Kujukuri (99 ri) Beach." Japan: Mokujisha, 1972, First Edition, white boards with embossed title, photo decorated slipcase, 32 cm x 22 cm, 152 pp of b/w photos + 8 pp of text in Japanese, 89 single- and double-page gravure images with fold-outs, insert sheet with photo data.

A beautiful photo document of a by-gone era - subtitled "umi no ikiru hito bito" - which means something like "the people whose life is the ocean." Kujukuri Beach is Japan's longest beach, named after an ancient unit of measure - 99 ri. This book documents the fading traditional lifestyle of the fishing villages along the beach. This is the rare first edition of this book, which was reissued only once in a new edition in the 2000s, also out of print and expensive. There is something about the ocean, islands, fishing villages and 1970s era gravure printing that brought out the best in Japanese photographers.

Condition: Very Good, interior pages are beautiful, binding is very tight, slipcase is very good, though there is some toning on the topside.
