* Yoshiyuki IWASE "Ama no Gunzo" 2001Photobook Rare Numbered Limited Edition

Availability: Out of stock

Yoshiyuki IWASE, photographer. "Ama no Gunzo: Iwase Yoshiyuki Shashinku." Tokyo: Furusato Bunka Kenkyukai, 2001, 1st Revised Edition, HB, dj, 26 cm x 26 cm, 155 pp, b/w photos, text in Japanese, Limited Edition of 500.

A rare special numbered limited edition of Iwase's classic photos of the famous topless women divers of Japan, published by the Furusato Cultural Studies Association. This was released a year before the sometimes-seen 2002 edition published by Todosha and the more common recent 2012 printing. Iwase was a sake brewer and a talented photographer devoted to photographing the Ama diving women and their fishing community. Unlike Yoshinobu Nakamura and Kusukazu Uraguchi, Iwase seems to have been content to remain on the beach - perhaps because the Ama women didn't actually dive topless in the course of work. Brewing sake and going to the beach must be a healthy lifestyle since Iwase lived a long life, born in 1904, died in 2001 - the year of this edition.
